Cruz, Sanchez Help B-Mets Snap Skid
5/16/2007
J.E. Cruz hit a go-ahead three-run triple in support of Jose Sanchez, who allowed a run over five innings, as the Binghamton Mets took a 9-4 decision from the Connecticut Defenders at Dodd Stadium Wednesday. The win ends Binghamton’s two-game skid.
Connecticut (14-20) went ahead in the first when Mark Minicozzi doubled off Sanchez (1-2), moved to third on a groundout and came home on John Bowker’s sacrifice fly.
The B-Mets (14-22) didn’t respond until the fourth. Fernando Martinez began the rally with a one-out double before Connecticut starter Nick Pereira issued back-to-back two-out walks to Mark Kiger and Mike Nickeas, loading the bases. Up came Cruz, who cleared them with his triple down the leftfield line. Corey Ragsdale then bunted a single down the first-base line, scoring Cruz for a 4-1 B-Mets lead.
Pereira (1-4) hurt himself again with a walk in the seventh, when leadoff hitter Ragsdale drew the free pass. B-Mets reliever Raul Valdes bunted Ragsdale to second before Corey moved to third on a wild pitch. Coles then grounded out, scoring Ragsdale to make it 5-1.
Martinez and Caleb Stewart led off the eighth with back-to-back homers off Connecticut’s Jeff Petersen for a 7-1 advantage. After Connecticut got two in the bottom of the frame on Horwitz’s homer and Simon Klink’s RBI single, the B-Mets tacked on a pair in the ninth. Coles led off with a double and scored when Jose Coronado reached on an error. After being singled to third by Martinez, Coronado came in on Stewart’s sacrifice fly, putting Binghamton up 9-3.
Bowker hit another sac fly in the ninth to account for the game’s final run.
Thursday, the B-Mets wrap up their four-game series against the Connecticut Defenders. Marcos Carvajal (1-2, 6.67) will start for the B-Mets against Ben Cox (0-4, 4.66) of Connecticut. Game time is 10:35 from Dodd Stadium with the radio broadcast starting at 10:20 on ESPN 1360 WYOS.
Notes: Ragsdale and Mike DiFelice were the last pair of B-Mets to hit back-to-back homers, 7/23/06 @ POR…only once in the last eight games has a B-Mets starting pitcher lasted through the sixth inning…Coles has hits in all eight of his games with Binghamton and 18 straight between the B-Mets and St. Lucie…Valdes, called up from St. Lucie Tuesday, made his B-Mets debut, tossing two scoreless innings. Rafael Arroyo, called up from St. Lucie Monday, also got into his first game with Binghamton in 2007, popping out to second as a pinch-hitter in the eighth.
